Luis Tolosa: The Lens Chronicler

By Lidya Esther Ochoa (Taken from RA Digital)

Holguín. Cuba. - Luis Tolosa was my friend. He was to all journalists from the province of Holguin. His death leaves behind a remarkable gap, because he devoted his life to record in pictures and films the most important events of the province, scene of his great professionalism.

He worked as a photographer for ¡Ahora! daily paper and as a cameraman for Tele-Cristal television center, and enthralled readers and viewers at both works due to his magic when capturing the right moment: the happy or the thinking face from peasants, students and artists, main characters of his lens.

His presence rendered security to journalists, waiting for his pictures or films, for their press-works to have a distinguishing touch. Tolosa, with his lifelong simplicity and modest creativity, never failed at his work and he did it spontaneously.

“He is an artist”, told his coworkers on appreciating the printed photos and films after edition. Thus he turned in his life to the profession he loved very much. He went into retirement but never lost track of journalism. Only Short-sightedness and illness stopped him from keeping us company for a longer time.

Luis Tolosa, a born producer, could get an event, and like in good films, had them started and gave them later a final touch. I remember very well a young girl holding an old-woman’s hand to accompany her on Election Day. Without being noted, Tolosa filmed the instant they stepped into the high-school to vote and waited until they both came out finally.

It was a peculiar way to give people prominence in the news. Magic and commitment define exactly the life of this friend to all journalists in Holguin.
